Eight gifts we’d give our own family
Every December, someone at our counter asks the same two questions. What do I bring the friend who’s hosting? And what do I get the person who has everything? These are our answers, plus a few for everyone else on your list.

Gifts for the friend who’s hosting
Skip the bottle of wine. Bring something that’s still on the table in February.
Thrown by hand two towns over
Speckled Oat Serving Bowl
$68
Eleven inches across, big enough for a salad that feeds eight or a pile of clementines on the counter all winter. Because each bowl is thrown by hand, the speckle and the drip of the glaze land a little differently every time. It goes in the dishwasher, which the host will appreciate at 11 p.m.

Pairs with our pink-tipped matches ($18)
Beeswax Tapers, Set of 4
$24
Poured with beeswax from a farm up the road. Each taper burns about eight hours with almost no smoke, and smells faintly of honey once it’s lit. They come tied with twine, ready to hand over at the door.

Gifts for the one who’d rather stay in
Two things for long nights on the couch.
Soft the day it’s unwrapped
Stonewashed Linen Throw
$145
At just under three pounds, it’s heavy enough to matter on a cold night and light enough to leave out all year. It’s washed with stones before it ships, so it starts soft and gets softer with every wash. 50 by 60 inches, fringed at both ends.

Our best seller, three winters running
Cedar & Smoke Candle
$38
Cedar first, then a little smoke, then vanilla underneath. It’s soy wax in an amber jar, with a wooden wick that crackles for about 50 hours. People buy one as a gift and come back in January for themselves.

Gifts for the one who has everything
A cheese board that hangs on the wall. A print from an illustrator down the road. Odds are they don’t have either.
Hangs on the wall between parties
Walnut Board with Brass Ring
$84
Solid walnut, 16 by 8 inches and oiled by hand. That’s the size of a real cheese plate, not a cutting board pretending to be one. The brass ring hangs it on the wall when it’s not in use, and a tin of board butter comes with it, so it still looks like this next year.

Drawn by an illustrator down the road
Pine Branch Print, 8 × 10
$32
An eastern white pine, letterpressed by hand on heavy cotton paper, so you can feel the lines when you run a finger over them. It comes with the brass clip in the photo, so it goes on the wall the day it’s opened. No frame shopping.

Little gifts, under $30
For stockings, teachers, neighbors and the office swap.
Fits in a stocking
Pink-Tipped Matches in a Glass Cloche
$18
Sixty long matches with dusty pink tips, in a glass cloche with a striker stone. Pretty enough to leave out on a shelf, and at four inches, long enough to light a candle burned down to the bottom of its jar.

An easy yes for a teacher or a neighbor
Fern Tea Towels, Set of 2
$26
Heavy cotton, 20 by 28 inches, printed by hand from a carved wood block, so every fern sits a little differently. They look good enough to hang off the oven door when company comes.
